Ocean Discovery Institute programs are supported by 10 full-time professional staff members, 15+ part-time employees, a volunteer corps of more than 300 individuals, more than six Ph.D. scientific advisors, and several other advisory boards representing our youth participants, families, educators, and conservationists.
Shara Fisler - Executive Director (

Shara Fisler is founder and Executive Director of Ocean Discovery Institute. She holds a B.S. in environmental science from the University of California Santa Barbara and a M.A. in marine resource management from University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Shara has served as an instructor at the University of San Diego in the Marine and Environmental Studies and Biology Departments, where she taught marine science and evolutionary biology for 9 years.
Lindsay Goodwin - Director of Programs (

Lindsay Goodwin is Director of Programs for Ocean Discovery Institute. She leads program and curriculum development, and evaluation. Lindsay chairs the City Heights Canyons and Communities Alliance and is a member of the California Science Teachers Association and National Marine Educators Association. Lindsay holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Notre Dame and a M.Ed. with a specialization in curriculum design and teaching from the University of San Diego.
Travis Kemnitz - Director of Student Relations (

Travis Kemnitz is Director of Student Relations at Ocean Discovery Institute. He is responsible for developing and facilitating supports for all Ocean Leaders involved in the after-school programs and/or alumni enrolled in college. These supports include academic support, college preparation, career exploration, and crisis prevention/ response. Travis received a B.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of San Diego and has several certifications including Wilderness First Responder and Advanced Scuba.
Elizabeth Horpedahl - Development and Communications Officer (

Elizabeth Horpedahl is the Development and Communications Officer for Ocean Discovery Institute. Elizabeth raises funds to support programs through grant writing and special event management, and coordinates agency communications. Prior, she worked with San Diego non-profit organizations in event coordination, volunteer management, and education. Elizabeth holds a B.A. in Politics from UC Santa Cruz and a certificate in fundraising management.
Melissa Katigbak - After School Programs Coordinator (

Melissa Katigbak is the After School Program Coordinator. She works with an amazing group of staff and students in the SEA Semester, Students Empowering Students and BAHIA programs. She received her BA from the University of San Diego and a teaching credential from CSU San Marcos. Melissa has a strong background in experiential education, is proficient in Spanish and holds a WFA (Wilderness First Aid) certification.
Jeri Nolan - School Programs Coordinator (

Jeri Nolan is the School Programs Coordinator at Ocean Discovery Institute. Jeri works on curriculum development as well as managing SEA Series, Ocean Discovery Institutes' formal school-based education program. She holds a B.S. in both Marine Science and Biology from the University of Miami, and a M.S. in Science Teaching from Florida State University as well as a State of Florida Teaching Credential.
Danielle Carter is an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with Ocean Discovery Institute. She works on writing and revising curriculum and teaching as a lead instructor for the Ocean Science Explorers elementary school program. Danielle earned a B.S. in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego.
Lindsay Adamski is an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with Ocean Discovery Institute. She works under the Director of Student Relations in facilitating supports for Ocean Leaders and assisting in coordinating marine science and college readiness programs. Additionally, she is working to improve student evaluation systems. Lindsay earned a B.A. in Social Work from Providence College.

Jamie Weed is the Office and Grants Administrator at Ocean Discovery Institute. Jamie holds a B.S in environmental science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to Ocean Discovery Institute, Jamie was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala working on community management and was the office of manager of a small business.
Anne Correia - Building Operations Supervisor (

Anne Correia is the Building Operations Supervisor at Ocean Discovery Institute. Anne has been with Ocean Discovery Institute since January 2008 and started teaching for the Ocean Science Explorers program as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member before taking on the role of Building Operations Supervisor. She now oversees the facility and technology systems, including facility assistants. Anne earned a B.S. in Environmental Science with concentrations in Ecological Design and Plant and Soil Science from the University of Vermont.
Meet our Board of Directors
Ocean Discovery Institute is led by a volunteer board of directors who serve rotating three year terms. The Board represents a variety of civic sectors including government, business, law, conservation organizations, and health care.
Kurt Gering, Chairman of the Board
Kurt Gering is Director of Training and Organizational Development at GreatCall, Inc. creator of the Jitterbug cell phone. He's responsible for customer service, direct sales, retail sales and leadership training. Kurt has been in the education and development field for over 15 years. He also serves as a volunteer Big Brother with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of San Diego County and as a contributing educator in the LEAD San Diego program. Kurt holds a B.A., M.Ed and an M.B.A. John E. Johns, Vice Chair
John Johns is President of Providence Marketing Corp., providing strategic counsel to select companies. He is co-founder of New West Products, Inc., which was acquired by ITW. Prior, John was Publisher and Editorial Director of East/West Network. He has served as Chairman of Camp Ronald McDonald and VP of Southern California Children's Cancer Services. A graduate of Brown University, John also serves on the Advisory Board of Children and Nature Network.
Scott Grimes
Scott Grimes is a Program Officer at the Endangered Habitats League, a nonprofit organization that promotes the conservation of wildlife habitat in Southern California. Scott previously served as Director of Research at San Diego Dialogue, a university-anchored policy center serving the San Diego region. His published work has addressed such issues as K-12 education reform, growth management and regional planning. Scott holds degrees from UCLA and UC San Diego. Ted Griswold
Ted Griswold is a partner in the Environmental Practice Group at the law firm of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch, LLP. His practice emphasizes natural resource, wetlands, habitat, Native American and environmental land use issues. Ted holds a B.S. in Biology, a M.S. in Wetland Ecology and a juris doctor degree. He has been practicing environmental law in southern California since 1992 and is involved with civil and community benefit organizations throughout San Diego County. John Murphy
John V. Murphy, a San Diego native, has been living and working in San Diego County for the past 28 years. John is a V.P. with San Diego National Bank in its mortgage division. For many years John acted as the volunteer organizer for the Christmas in April organization's North County projects, Meals on Wheels and The Building Industry Association's "Cares For Kids" program. Ileana Ovalle
Ileana Ovalle is Senior Manager of External Affairs for Cox Communications. With 20 years experience in government and nonprofit management, Ileana was named a 2008 Power-to-Be by San Diego Magazine; is a LEAD San Diego graduate; serves on the boards of the ORCA Fund, Junior Achievement, South County Economic Development Council, Cox Diversity Council, and co-founder of Cox Conserves San Diego. Ileana holds an MA in nonprofit leadership/management from USD and a BA in public administration from SDSU. Niel Pollock
Niel Pollock, LEED AP, is President of Nielsen Construction. Niel graduated from UCSD with a degree in Economics. A native San Diegan, he currently serves his community as a member of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Disabilities, HeadNorth Foundation, CoC's CEO Roundtable and the Peninsula YMCA. Niel is the co-founder of the Ranchero Fund for Spinal Cord Injuries at the Sharp Healthcare Foundation with his wife, Rebecca.
Meet our Scientific Advisors
The Ocean Discovery Institute Scientific Advisory Board oversees all of the organization's research and education initiatives and includes academic leaders from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Stanford, University of Hawaii, and the University of San Diego.
Eric Cathcart
Eric Cathcart is a State of California registered Professional Geologist and Environmental Assessor with more than 14 years of experience providing geologic, hydrogeologic, site characterization, and environmental remediation services to private businesses, public organizations, and government agencies. Eric is an adjunct faculty member of the Marine and Environmental Studies Department at the University of San Diego and has a B.S. in Geology and an M.S. in Marine Science.
Dr. Paul Dayton
Dr. Paul Dayton is a Professor of Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. Paul received a BSc in Zoology from the University of Arizona and earned a PhD in Zoology from the University of Washington, Seattle. Paul provides leadership to Ocean Discovery Institute by advising on the development of scientific projects, guiding the development of new programmatic efforts, and working directly with the students of Ocean Discovery Institute.
Dr. Mark Denny
Dr. Mark Denny is a Marine Biologist at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station where he studies the plants and animals that live on wave-swept shores. By applying principles from engineering and physics to living organisms-an approach known as biomechanics-he specializes in predicting how changes in the environment will affect the ecology and evolution of marine life.
Dr. Sarah Gray
Sarah C. Gray, an Associate Professor in Marine Science and Environmental Studies at the University of San Diego, received her BA in Geological Sciences from the University of Colorado, Boulder. After serving in the Peace Corps in Kenya, she completed her Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from UC Santa Cruz. She teaches courses in earth science, climate change, geological oceanography, and environmental geology and conducts research in paleoclimatology, marine sedimentology, and the geology of coral reefs.
Dr. John Mendlein
Dr. Mendlein began his career studying bluefin tuna at NOAA and fish physiology at the University of Miami. Dr. Mendlein then earned a Ph.D. in biophysics and physiology from UCLA and a J.D. from UC Hastings. During the last fifteen years he has worked in biotech companies in senior leadership roles. He is an avid enthusiast of ocean-related activities. His work at Ocean Discovery Institute allows him to share his interests in science with future scientists and stewards of the sea.
Dr. Yonat Swimmer
Dr. Yonat Swimmer is a Fisheries Biologist and works on fisheries' bycatch issues at NOAA Fisheries. Yonat incorporates Ocean Discovery Institute's students into studies designed to reduce the turtle and shark bycatch. Yonat holds a B.A. in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Her dissertation work focused on physiology and behavior of green turtles in the remote Northwest Hawaiian Islands.
Dr. Drew Talley
Dr. Drew Talley is an Assistant Professor for the Environmental Studies and Marine Science department at the University of San Diego. Drew received his B.S. in Biology from San Diego State University, and earned a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His current research focuses on the complex ways in which different habitats are connected, often through the actions of animals or the movement of food.
Dr. Theresa Sinicrope Talley
Dr. Theresa Talley is a Post-doctoral Researcher and Instructor at the University of California, San Diego and Adjunct Faculty in Biology at the University of San Diego. Theresa works closely with Ocean Discovery Institute's students, overseeing the investigation of connections between coastal wetlands and adjacent ecosystems. Theresa completed her B.S. in Botany at Connecticut College, earned a M.S. in Biology at San Diego State University, and completed her Ph.D. in Ecology at the University of California in Davis.
Dr. John Wang
Dr. John Wang is a Research Associate with the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) at the University of Hawaii-Manoa and NOAA-Fisheries. John works with Ocean Discovery Institute to study why sea turtles and sharks are caught in fishing gear and to develop strategies to reduce this incidental capture. He received his B.S. from Duke University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Zhi-Yong (John) Yin
Dr. Zhi-Yong (John) Yin is a hydroclimatologist in Marine Science & Environmental Studies department at University of San Diego. His research area includes climate variability and its impact on hydrological cycle. He has published articles on spatial and temporal variations of climate in various regions, including the Tibetan Plateau, in relation to macroscale atmospheric circulation patterns. He earned his B.S. and M.S. from Peking University in China and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
Meet our Youth Advisory Council
The Youth Advisory Council is made of Ocean Leader students. These students are in middle school through high school and represent their fellow Ocean Leaders as they work to build the future of the organization. The Youth Advisory Council meets monthly.
Christian Castro - Grade 11
I am excited to be on the Youth Advisory Council and be able to make a change by improving the health and quality of life in my community. I am proud to be a part of this council because I will be able to help Ocean Discovery Institute accomplish their mission and vision. I feel that I can give back just a little of what they have given me. Maria Puga - Grade 10
I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I am a creative person who likes to work with others, especially when it involves improving something or helping someone. I am looking forward to sharing my ideas and opinions to help make positive impacts within the community and environment. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I wanted to be a part of the decision making team of Ocean Discovery Institute. I want to be a part of the changes that will be made and I can say, "I helped with that!" I am excited to be part of a group that has a voice for our generation and the generations in the future. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because of the projects we are working on. We get to investigate the construction, function, and design of "green" buildings. This is important to me because I want to be a structural engineer and this investigation with the council will help me better understand structural engineering. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I want to be a bridge between the Ocean Discovery Institute students and staff in order to make our programs the best they can be. It will be exciting to be in the backstage of the organization and see how the programs run. I am also excited about the new green building. Abigail Figueroa - Grade 8
I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I wanted to stand out and be a voice for the Middle School Ocean Discovery Institute students. I also wanted to help in some of the big decision making of the organization like the new name and logo and in working on the new building. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I wanted to have a bigger role in the decisions and path of Ocean Discovery Institute. I am interested in helping to get the new Living Lab built and in all the "behind the scenes" action that the staff goes through. I primarily joined the Youth Advisory Council because the council helps Ocean Discovery Institute, therefore I feel like I'm returning the love. I am mostly excited about the building because it's not only going to be "green" but also in my community. Meet our Family Advisory Council
The Family Advisory Committee is made up of parents and relatives of Ocean Leader students. These family members advise Ocean Discovery Institute around program enhancements, plans for the future, and meeting the needs of each family. In addition, this group helps to facilitate events, get other families involved, and secure additional resources for the organization. The Family Advisory Committee meets quarterly.
Lorena Alvarez
Lorena Alvarez is the mother of Alex and Richie Alvarez. Alex has participated in our after-school, intensive programming since 2007. Richie has participated in our after-school, intensive programming since 2006. Paula Alvarez

Elviro Barraza is the father of Carolina and Ulisses Barraza. Carolina is an alumna who now attends Chico State University; she participated in our after-school, intensive programming from 2004-2007. Meet our Education and Youth Development Advisors
The Education & Youth Development Advisory Board counsels Ocean Discovery Institute in the development and execution of education programs and support services for youth. The board has representatives from multiple sectors including public education, mental health services, special education, and social work.
Dr. Sandy Buczynski
Sandy Buczynski, Ph.D. is coordinator of the Math, Science and Technology Education program and Associate Professor in the department of Learning and Teaching at University of San Diego. She teaches courses in the areas of curriculum design, secondary teaching methods, and science pedagogy. Her research interests include: international education, action research, and inquiry learning. She is the co-author of Story starters and science notebooking: Developing children’s thinking through literacy and inquiry, Teacher Ideas Press.
Joe Malek
Joe Malek is a public educator who specializes in special education, diversity issues and youth development. He works with students and their families to help them achieve quality educational experiences by addressing cultural, linguistic, social and academic differences. Joe received a B.A. in Social Work from Pacific University and earned his M.A. and teaching credential in Special Education from San Francisco State University.
Dr. Carlos Nelson
Dr. Carlos Nelson is a Clinical Psychologist and has provided counseling services to adolescents and their families for the last 16 years. Carlos earned a B.A. in Political Science from UCSD in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in 1994.
Joe Ogilvie
Mr. Ogilvie operates a private counseling practice, College Counseling and Consulting, and has over 30 years of experience counseling in San Diego City Schools. Joe earned a B.A. in Psychology and M.S. in Counseling, both from SDSU.
Dr. Adam Pacal
Dr. Pacal is an internal medicine physician at Scripps Clinic. He received his medical degree and bachelor of science in biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his medical training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Prior to joining Scripps Clinic, he served as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy.
Dr. Roxanne Ruzic
Dr. Roxanne Ruzic is an educational consultant. A former research scientist and instructional designer, Roxanne assists organizations with program evaluation, program development, and planning and works with individuals across the United States on issues related to college readiness, college success, and career choice. Roxanne has a bachelor's in English and a master's in education from Stanford University and a doctorate in educational psychology with an emphasis in research methods from Harvard University.
Meet our Environmental Advisors
The Environmental Advisory Board counsels Ocean Discovery Institute on all environmental stewardship projects. These advisors include representatives from government, environmental non-profit organizations, landscape architects, and environmental consultants. Those advisors focused on habitat stewardship meet regularly to design and implement restoration projects.
Craig Hooker
Craig Hooker is a Landscape Architect and Planner in San Diego. Craig is a Planner for the City of San Diego Development Services Department and Principle of EnviroFit studio. His interests revolve around regenerative design, sustainability, and community design process. Craig received his B.A. in Art from CSU Long Beach, and earned a M.L.A. from Cal Poly Pomona.

Danielle earned a B.S. in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego.
Lindsay Adamski is an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with Ocean Discovery Institute. She works under the Director of Student Relations in facilitating supports for Ocean Leaders and assisting in coordinating marine science and college readiness programs. Additionally, she is working to improve student evaluation systems. Lindsay earned a B.A. in Social Work from Providence College.

) Jamie Weed is the Office and Grants Administrator at Ocean Discovery Institute. Jamie holds a B.S in environmental science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to Ocean Discovery Institute, Jamie was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala working on community management and was the office of manager of a small business.
Anne Correia - Building Operations Supervisor (

) Anne Correia is the Building Operations Supervisor at Ocean Discovery Institute. Anne has been with Ocean Discovery Institute since January 2008 and started teaching for the Ocean Science Explorers program as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member before taking on the role of Building Operations Supervisor. She now oversees the facility and technology systems, including facility assistants. Anne earned a B.S. in Environmental Science with concentrations in Ecological Design and Plant and Soil Science from the University of Vermont.

Ocean Discovery Institute is led by a volunteer board of directors who serve rotating three year terms. The Board represents a variety of civic sectors including government, business, law, conservation organizations, and health care.
Kurt Gering, Chairman of the Board
Kurt Gering is Director of Training and Organizational Development at GreatCall, Inc. creator of the Jitterbug cell phone. He's responsible for customer service, direct sales, retail sales and leadership training. Kurt has been in the education and development field for over 15 years. He also serves as a volunteer Big Brother with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of San Diego County and as a contributing educator in the LEAD San Diego program. Kurt holds a B.A., M.Ed and an M.B.A. John E. John Johns is President of Providence Marketing Corp., providing strategic counsel to select companies. He is co-founder of New West Products, Inc., which was acquired by ITW. Prior, John was Publisher and Editorial Director of East/West Network. He has served as Chairman of Camp Ronald McDonald and VP of Southern California Children's Cancer Services. A graduate of Brown University, John also serves on the Advisory Board of Children and Nature Network.
Scott Grimes
Scott Grimes is a Program Officer at the Endangered Habitats League, a nonprofit organization that promotes the conservation of wildlife habitat in Southern California. Scott previously served as Director of Research at San Diego Dialogue, a university-anchored policy center serving the San Diego region. His published work has addressed such issues as K-12 education reform, growth management and regional planning. Scott holds degrees from UCLA and UC San Diego. Ted Griswold
Ted Griswold is a partner in the Environmental Practice Group at the law firm of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch, LLP. His practice emphasizes natural resource, wetlands, habitat, Native American and environmental land use issues. Ted holds a B.S. in Biology, a M.S. in Wetland Ecology and a juris doctor degree. He has been practicing environmental law in southern California since 1992 and is involved with civil and community benefit organizations throughout San Diego County. John Murphy
John V. Murphy, a San Diego native, has been living and working in San Diego County for the past 28 years. John is a V.P. with San Diego National Bank in its mortgage division. For many years John acted as the volunteer organizer for the Christmas in April organization's North County projects, Meals on Wheels and The Building Industry Association's "Cares For Kids" program. Ileana Ovalle is Senior Manager of External Affairs for Cox Communications. With 20 years experience in government and nonprofit management, Ileana was named a 2008 Power-to-Be by San Diego Magazine; is a LEAD San Diego graduate; serves on the boards of the ORCA Fund, Junior Achievement, South County Economic Development Council, Cox Diversity Council, and co-founder of Cox Conserves San Diego. Ileana holds an MA in nonprofit leadership/management from USD and a BA in public administration from SDSU. Niel Pollock
Niel Pollock, LEED AP, is President of Nielsen Construction. Niel graduated from UCSD with a degree in Economics. A native San Diegan, he currently serves his community as a member of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Disabilities, HeadNorth Foundation, CoC's CEO Roundtable and the Peninsula YMCA. Niel is the co-founder of the Ranchero Fund for Spinal Cord Injuries at the Sharp Healthcare Foundation with his wife, Rebecca.

The Ocean Discovery Institute Scientific Advisory Board oversees all of the organization's research and education initiatives and includes academic leaders from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Stanford, University of Hawaii, and the University of San Diego.
Eric Cathcart
Eric Cathcart is a State of California registered Professional Geologist and Environmental Assessor with more than 14 years of experience providing geologic, hydrogeologic, site characterization, and environmental remediation services to private businesses, public organizations, and government agencies. Eric is an adjunct faculty member of the Marine and Environmental Studies Department at the University of San Diego and has a B.S. in Geology and an M.S. in Marine Science.
Dr. Paul Dayton
Dr. Paul Dayton is a Professor of Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. Paul received a BSc in Zoology from the University of Arizona and earned a PhD in Zoology from the University of Washington, Seattle. Paul provides leadership to Ocean Discovery Institute by advising on the development of scientific projects, guiding the development of new programmatic efforts, and working directly with the students of Ocean Discovery Institute.
Dr. Mark Denny
Dr. Mark Denny is a Marine Biologist at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station where he studies the plants and animals that live on wave-swept shores. By applying principles from engineering and physics to living organisms-an approach known as biomechanics-he specializes in predicting how changes in the environment will affect the ecology and evolution of marine life.
Dr. Sarah Gray
Sarah C. Gray, an Associate Professor in Marine Science and Environmental Studies at the University of San Diego, received her BA in Geological Sciences from the University of Colorado, Boulder. After serving in the Peace Corps in Kenya, she completed her Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from UC Santa Cruz. She teaches courses in earth science, climate change, geological oceanography, and environmental geology and conducts research in paleoclimatology, marine sedimentology, and the geology of coral reefs.
Dr. John Mendlein
Dr. Mendlein began his career studying bluefin tuna at NOAA and fish physiology at the University of Miami. Dr. Mendlein then earned a Ph.D. in biophysics and physiology from UCLA and a J.D. from UC Hastings. During the last fifteen years he has worked in biotech companies in senior leadership roles. He is an avid enthusiast of ocean-related activities. His work at Ocean Discovery Institute allows him to share his interests in science with future scientists and stewards of the sea.
Dr. Yonat Swimmer
Dr. Yonat Swimmer is a Fisheries Biologist and works on fisheries' bycatch issues at NOAA Fisheries. Yonat incorporates Ocean Discovery Institute's students into studies designed to reduce the turtle and shark bycatch. Yonat holds a B.A. in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Her dissertation work focused on physiology and behavior of green turtles in the remote Northwest Hawaiian Islands.
Dr. Drew Talley
Dr. Drew Talley is an Assistant Professor for the Environmental Studies and Marine Science department at the University of San Diego. Drew received his B.S. in Biology from San Diego State University, and earned a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His current research focuses on the complex ways in which different habitats are connected, often through the actions of animals or the movement of food.
Dr. Theresa Sinicrope Talley
Dr. Theresa Talley is a Post-doctoral Researcher and Instructor at the University of California, San Diego and Adjunct Faculty in Biology at the University of San Diego. Theresa works closely with Ocean Discovery Institute's students, overseeing the investigation of connections between coastal wetlands and adjacent ecosystems. Theresa completed her B.S. in Botany at Connecticut College, earned a M.S. in Biology at San Diego State University, and completed her Ph.D. in Ecology at the University of California in Davis.
Dr. John Wang
Dr. John Wang is a Research Associate with the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) at the University of Hawaii-Manoa and NOAA-Fisheries. John works with Ocean Discovery Institute to study why sea turtles and sharks are caught in fishing gear and to develop strategies to reduce this incidental capture. He received his B.S. from Duke University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Zhi-Yong (John) Yin
Dr. Zhi-Yong (John) Yin is a hydroclimatologist in Marine Science & Environmental Studies department at University of San Diego. His research area includes climate variability and its impact on hydrological cycle. He has published articles on spatial and temporal variations of climate in various regions, including the Tibetan Plateau, in relation to macroscale atmospheric circulation patterns. He earned his B.S. and M.S. from Peking University in China and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
Meet our Youth Advisory Council
The Youth Advisory Council is made of Ocean Leader students. These students are in middle school through high school and represent their fellow Ocean Leaders as they work to build the future of the organization. The Youth Advisory Council meets monthly.
Christian Castro - Grade 11
I am excited to be on the Youth Advisory Council and be able to make a change by improving the health and quality of life in my community. I am proud to be a part of this council because I will be able to help Ocean Discovery Institute accomplish their mission and vision. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I am a creative person who likes to work with others, especially when it involves improving something or helping someone. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I wanted to be a part of the decision making team of Ocean Discovery Institute. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because of the projects we are working on. We get to investigate the construction, function, and design of "green" buildings. This is important to me because I want to be a structural engineer and this investigation with the council will help me better understand structural engineering. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I want to be a bridge between the Ocean Discovery Institute students and staff in order to make our programs the best they can be. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I wanted to stand out and be a voice for the Middle School Ocean Discovery Institute students. I also wanted to help in some of the big decision making of the organization like the new name and logo and in working on the new building. I joined the Youth Advisory Council because I wanted to have a bigger role in the decisions and path of Ocean Discovery Institute. I primarily joined the Youth Advisory Council because the council helps Ocean Discovery Institute, therefore I feel like I'm returning the love. Meet our Family Advisory Council
The Family Advisory Committee is made up of parents and relatives of Ocean Leader students. These family members advise Ocean Discovery Institute around program enhancements, plans for the future, and meeting the needs of each family. In addition, this group helps to facilitate events, get other families involved, and secure additional resources for the organization. The Family Advisory Committee meets quarterly.

Meet our Education and Youth Development Advisors
The Education & Youth Development Advisory Board counsels Ocean Discovery Institute in the development and execution of education programs and support services for youth. The board has representatives from multiple sectors including public education, mental health services, special education, and social work.
Dr. Sandy Buczynski
Sandy Buczynski, Ph.D. is coordinator of the Math, Science and Technology Education program and Associate Professor in the department of Learning and Teaching at University of San Diego. She teaches courses in the areas of curriculum design, secondary teaching methods, and science pedagogy. Her research interests include: international education, action research, and inquiry learning. She is the co-author of Story starters and science notebooking: Developing children’s thinking through literacy and inquiry, Teacher Ideas Press.
Joe Malek
Joe Malek is a public educator who specializes in special education, diversity issues and youth development. He works with students and their families to help them achieve quality educational experiences by addressing cultural, linguistic, social and academic differences. Joe received a B.A. in Social Work from Pacific University and earned his M.A. and teaching credential in Special Education from San Francisco State University.
Dr. Carlos Nelson
Dr. Carlos Nelson is a Clinical Psychologist and has provided counseling services to adolescents and their families for the last 16 years. Carlos earned a B.A. in Political Science from UCSD in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in 1994.
Joe Ogilvie
Mr. Ogilvie operates a private counseling practice, College Counseling and Consulting, and has over 30 years of experience counseling in San Diego City Schools. Joe earned a B.A. in Psychology and M.S. in Counseling, both from SDSU.
Dr. Adam Pacal
Dr. Pacal is an internal medicine physician at Scripps Clinic. He received his medical degree and bachelor of science in biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his medical training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Prior to joining Scripps Clinic, he served as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy.
Dr. Roxanne Ruzic
Dr. Roxanne Ruzic is an educational consultant. A former research scientist and instructional designer, Roxanne assists organizations with program evaluation, program development, and planning and works with individuals across the United States on issues related to college readiness, college success, and career choice. Roxanne has a bachelor's in English and a master's in education from Stanford University and a doctorate in educational psychology with an emphasis in research methods from Harvard University.
Meet our Environmental Advisors
The Environmental Advisory Board counsels Ocean Discovery Institute on all environmental stewardship projects. These advisors include representatives from government, environmental non-profit organizations, landscape architects, and environmental consultants. Those advisors focused on habitat stewardship meet regularly to design and implement restoration projects.
Craig Hooker
Craig Hooker is a Landscape Architect and Planner in San Diego. Craig is a Planner for the City of San Diego Development Services Department and Principle of EnviroFit studio. His interests revolve around regenerative design, sustainability, and community design process. Craig received his B.A. in Art from CSU Long Beach, and earned a M.L.A. from Cal Poly Pomona.
Meet our Discovery Fellows
Discovery Fellows are Ocean Leader college students that have been with Ocean Discovery Institute since middle or high school and have been selected to participate in a special fellowship. These fellowships provide significant work experiences in a specific area of study. Discovery Fellows are provided with unique experiences that are not typically available to someone starting out in an entry-level position. These fellowships are designed to lead students to better career opportunities in the future and ensure they are prepared to take on a high level of responsibility.
