Discoveries in Research
Engaging students in authentic scientific research has demonstrated remarkable results in helping students to achieve previously unthinkable goals, including the pursuit of higher education. With a team of scientific advisors that develop and lead research efforts both in Baja California and in San Diego County, Ocean Discovery Institute students work to develop their knowledge, skills and self-confidence through the exploration and research of four key studies:![]() |

"The future of science and technological innovation in San Diego rests upon our success in developing and supporting a 'home grown' scientific work force." - Susan H. Laun, Vice President of Human Resources & Corporate Giving, QUALCOMM
Khanh Chi's Story - Conducting Scientific Research
Education: Attends UC Santa Cruz as a biology major.Became an Ocean Discovery Institute Student: 2007
Research Focus: Sea Turtles and Sustainable Fisheries
Research Partners: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and University of Hawaii
Past Research Experience: A recent immigrant from Vietnam, Khanh Chi had witnessed unsustainable fishing practices and wanted to contribute to identifying solutions. As an Ocean Discovery Institute student, during high school Khanh Chi worked alongside NOAA and University of Hawaii researchers to test strategies to reduce the accidental capture of sea turtles. Results of these studies are helping to develop innovative fisheries management tools that will protect endangered sea turtles while supporting the continuation of sustainable fisheries.
Research in Vietnam: Through our partnership with NOAA, Khanh Chi is able to work with the World Wildlife Fund in Hanoi, Vietnam to better understand the effectiveness of methods to reduce sea turtle captures. Using her knowledge of science, fisheries, and the Vietnamese language, Khanh Chi is able to help conservationists and her country of origin, while further developing her own skills and expertise.
Khanh Chi's Dream for the Future: To receive her PhD in marine science and continue working with fishing communities and scientists to develop novel solutions to conservation problems.
Khahn Chi's participation in authentic scientific research is emblematic of many student's experiences with Ocean Discovery Institute. Having the opportunity to conduct real-world research contributes to the scientific and conservation communities and empowers young people as they are able gain confidence and envision previously unthinkable goals.
"I am inspired to become a marine biologist and achieve my goal of protecting the environment and fisheries." - Khanh-Chi Dam, Freshman at UC Santa Cruz
